New band: Trio Valore

by Modculture 22 March, 2008

A new band in name, but Trio Valore features a few familiar faces.

This three-piece consists of Steve White (Paul Weller/Style Council), Damon Minchella (Ocean Colour Scene) and Seamus Beaghen (everyone from Morrissey and Iggy Pop through to Death In Vegas).

Together, they’re offering a new slant on the basement R&B/jazz combo, with an uptempo mix of drums, bass, hammond and brass – check out the tracks on the band’s MySpace page for a taster. The first album is titled Return Of The Iron Monkey should be out in May on an as-yet unconfirmed label. Might well be worth checking out.

Baracuta Ben Sherman Harrington jacket

by Modculture 22 March, 2008

I’m still not sure about the thinking behind it, as both companies already make similar garments, but you can now buy the limited edition Baracuta Ben Sherman Harrington jacket.

There are just 1,000 of the British-made jacket available worldwide, with 400 for the UK market in a choice of red (above), white and navy blue. Detailing includes a Baracuta tab on the front, an embroided Ben Sherman ‘Plectrum’ logo on the chest, an inner lining mixing the Baracuta and Ben Sherman ‘house’ check, two inner labels (one for each company) and as you can see from the image, the phrase ‘History Is made and never bought’ (which is sure to bring strong opinions I’m sure).

There’s also elasticated waist and cuffs, button pockets and the button collar. You can pick one for £135.

Fred Perry mid-season sale

by Modculture 22 March, 2008

If you happen to be near a Fred Perry store in the next few days – or if you check the Fred Perry website – you might pick up a bargain in the mid-season sale.

There’s a few things dotted around the site, but you’ll have to browse it as there’s no specific sale section. Nipped into one of the stores yesterday and there’s quite a lot marked down there – especially polo shits and sweaters – tank tops and long sleeve. All with a good chunk of money off too.

The sale seems to be running for just 10 days – March 20th through to March 30th.

Once Upon A Time In Wigan – Live!

by Modculture 22 March, 2008

Another northern soul play with a familiar title is premiering at Bolton’s Octagon Theatre – Once Upon A Time In Wigan – Live!

Not to be confused with the one doing the rounds a couple of years back, it’s a nostalgia tale, with one regular (Eugene) looking back from the club’s final night to is first night – and the drugs, sex, love and classic 60s and 70s American soul music he has since encountered.

Written by Mick Martin and directed by Mark Babych, the show also features a live band of actor musicians playing northern classics throughout. It runs from Thursday 5th June to Saturday 28th June 2008, with ticket prices starting at £8.50.
