8mm

You might have seen this on our Retro To Go site last week. If not – and you own an iPhone – you might want to check out the 8mm Vintage Camera app for the iPhone and iPod touch. Because it’s rather good.

It’s pretty much as it sounds, an app that allows you to turn the video camera on your Apple device into a vintage movie camera. By mixing and matching films and lenses, you can recreate the atmosphere of a bygone era, complete with dust and scratches, retro colors, flickering, light leaks, frame jitters, whatever you want to add for ‘authenticity’.

Effects are in ‘live view’ in the viewfinder, so you know what you are getting and with five lenses bundled, as well as five films, plus a button that shakes the film for even more authenticity, you can create a mini movie that look to be from the 1920s or best of all, like a home movie from the 60s and 70s. Once you’ve completed your movie, you can save to camera roll, email or directly share to YouTube. You can probably pass it off as the real thing if you get the detail right.

It’s available now, priced at $1.99 or £1.19. See below for a promo video shot by the company to show some of the effects. I’ve been using it for a few days now and it’s a lot of fun.

  1. This is so far the best video entirely shot with the 8mm camera app that I’ve seen:
