 ROCK 'N' ROLL SOUL (LONDON)
headline

Martin Horsfield talks us through the long-running London club night.
1. When and why did you set up the club?

November 2001, when some friends took over the Dove Regent on a back street in Islington. Their tenure only lasted a few months - and we actually presided over the last night it was open, and helped them drink the place dry - but, once we knew we had a crowd for the sort of night we wanted to put on, we walked into the Albany, Great Portland Street, and proposed doing it there. Needless to say, we chose the Albany because it had been the scene of the original Heavenly Sunday Social (which I queued for, but never got in to, sadly).

2. Who are you DJs? Do you have guest DJs coming in too? If so, anyone we might know?

There's me (The Horse) and Gary Barrell, who co-founded the night back in 2001. We've lost Nat Cramp (Sonic Cathedral), Al Harper, Emma Sunley and the Funk Pursuivant along the way but gained a new recruit, our junior crate-digger Barney, or Jah Shabby to his friends. We always try to have a guest every month, from well-known faces like Eddie Piller and Andy Lewis (who met his partner at Rock'n'RollSoul), to The Go! Team, The Pipettes and The Draytones.

3. What kind of musical territory do you cover?

Broadly speaking, I cover southern soul, blue-eyed soul and daft cover versions; Gary plays mod pop and garage rock; and Barney plays funk and assorted exotica.

4. Give us an idea of a few tracks you might hear if you dropped in?

Vehicle - The Ides Of March, Living In The USA - Steve Miller Band, Bert's Apple Crumble - The Quick, Scotch On The Rocks - The Shadows, The Girls Can't Help It - Cliff Richard, Get Down With It - Little Richard, Soul Drippin' - The Standells, Love Loves To Love Love - Lulu, Hang On In There - Stovall Sisters, Barabajagal - Donovan/Jeff Beck. There's an ever-expanding Spotify playlist for you to dig in to right here.

5. What do you think you offer that other clubs might not?

A free badge most months, as worn by Noel Gallagher and Arthur Lee (see here for proof). The occasional patronage of cool folk like Kings Of Leon, The Libertines, The Dirtbombs, Martin Freeman and Paolo Hewitt. And a non-elitist, boozy vibe.

6. Your current venue - how long and have you been there and how does it work for the club?

The Phoenix, Cavendish Square, is the venue we always secretly fancied when we were at the Albany. It's got a long history dating back to mod revival nights in the early 80s, a great parquet dancefloor, and fantastic Sierra Nevada beer.

7. And how many people do you tend to attract for each night? Do you think anything might put people off coming along?

It holds 200, and with a bit of help from the drinkers who are in there already at the beginning of the night, we can just about fill it. People may be put off by the fact that they'd heard that Rock'n'RollSoul had a couple of years when attendances weren't too good and we have had some shonky venues. But they should give us another try - things are definitely back on the up.

8. What's your view on the current state of mod/soul nights?

There's plenty out there. I love the fact that you can go to Pork And Beans and see a whole new generation of mods doing their own thing.

9. What's the best and worst thing that's happened with the club?

The best was probably our Christmas party at Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes back in 2005. It was a total road-block with 300 oeople inside and maybe 100 on the pavement trying to get in. It was a case of right band, right time, as the year after our guests The Pipettes were doing a Christmas party of their own at the 2,000-capacity Forum, The Summer Specials on the Isle Of Man we also pretty special, with people coming over from London on their scooters. The worst was probably the outbreak of Elvis hooliganism. Some die-hards really didn't like all the soul versions of the King's tunes we were playing and looked like getting a bit tasty.

10. Finally, we need the lowdown on the club - listing details, how often, how to get in touch, that kind of thing.

We're at the Phoenix, Cavenish Square, last Friday of every month. It's £5 or £4 with a flyer or badge. You an find us at http://www.rocknrollsoul.co.uk, and http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/group.php?gid=244119749451. Get in touch via rocknrollsoul@mac.com
