Can you believe it is 30 years since this hit the big screen? Well it is – and to celebrate that fact, there is an Absolute Beginners: 30th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray.

It’s an interesting film, the perfect book to be converted into a cool movie. But it just never quite worked out. Director Julien Temple took the step of turning the classic Colin McInnes book (and absolute must-read mod novel) into something akin to a musical. A radical step and for many, one that didn’t work.

But it is an intriguing proposition, not least because its basis is that book. If you want to read my review of it, you can read that here. Basically, you should check it out.

Anyway, if you have and you do love the movie version, you’ll be pleased to know that an all-new Blu-ray version is coming out, alongside a DVD. As for the storyline, the advanced publicity reads:

Set against a backdrop! of emerging teen culture and rising racial tension in late 1950s London, Absolute Beginners follows the plight of struggling young photographer Colin, who sees his ambitious, fame seeking girlfriend Crepe Suzette (Patsy Kensit) slipping away as she ruthlessly pursues a career in fashion.

To win her back he need to compromise his idealism and do whatever it takes to make the big time.

That probably sums up the movie, although the book itself is more of a lifestyle guide for every aspiring teenager.

The soundtrack features the likes of Ray Davies, The Style Council, Sade, Jerry Dammers, Slim Gaillard and Gil Evans and the DVD release has extras including a new 53-minute documentary on the movie called Absolute Ambition, featuring interviews with key players in the movie.

You can pre-order the Blu-ray now, priced at £19.99.
