Big thanks to Jason for spotting that an album we mentioned some months back and a companion album are both on pre-order – The Scene Club: Ham Yard, London and The Twisted Wheel: Brazennose & Whitworth Street. Manchester albums.

The Scene Club album was due a release in September via Charly, but is only now down for a release. Since then, the tracklisting has changed a little and there’s a companion album focusing on an equally iconic club, Manchester’s Twisted Wheel.

Not a great amount is listed for either compilation (aside from the tracklistings below. Here’s the write-up for both.

Scene Club:
The Scene Club Ham Yard, London 1963-66 The Original Sound Of Northern Soul, Popcorn And R&B ‘The Scene Club was red hot, the hottest little club in London… and in 1963 London was the centre of the world – even if the rest of the world didn’t know it quite yet.’ Norman Jopling (Record Mirror)

The Scene club was in Ham Yard, off Great Windmill Street, in Soho, central London. It had previously been a jazz club, but by 1963 it had become a revered mod venue, playing soul, R&B, blues, ska and rock’n’roll records to a sharply dressed crowd. This new compilation collects some of the classic tracks that would have been played at the time. The 28 tracks include gems from Betty Everett, Ike and Tina Turner, Jimmy Reed, Billy Preston, The Upsetters and more.

Twisted Wheel:
The Twisted Wheel in Manchester is one of the legendary names in British clubbing history. Originally born in coffee bar in the city’s Brazennose Street in 1963, before later moving to a converted warehouse on Whitworth Street, it quickly developed a reputation as one of the country’s finest venues for hearing obscure, imported soul, R&B and ska records.

Music fans would flock from all around the country to the weekly all-nighters to hear live sets from some of the finest soul artists of the time. The term ‘Northern Soul’ was first coined by the journalist Dave Godin following a visit to the Twisted Wheel to describe the distinctive brand of music played there which couldn’t be found in London clubs at the time. This new compilation collects some of the classic tracks that would have been played at the time. The 28 tracks include gems from Little Richard, Bo Didley, Benny Spellman, Ernie K Doe, Solomon Burke, Gene Chandler, Betty Everett, The Dells, Fats Domino and more.

Both are listed as being available from 8th March 2013, selling for £10.74 each. be interesting to hear if there’s any added material about the clubs in the booklets. If you have anything to do with the releases, do let us know.

  1. These compilations are what appear to be the beginning of a series under the ‘Club Soul’ banner. A website is already up (with a link on Charly Records site) featuring video clips of the venues listed (taken from the DVD ‘Keep On Burning’)…
