It’s a two-parter, but on the plus side, the fact that Maximum R&B – The Birth Of The Who is on BBC 6music means it will be easy to catch up anytime.

The documentary is to mark the 50th anniversary of the first UK single (I Can’t Explain) and of the course, the 50th anniversary tour.

To coincide with that, this new documentary sees Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey look back to the very start of the band, recalling how The Who’s obsession with the music of Chicago, Memphis and Mississippi shaped their songwriting and explaining how these songs had parallels in the lives of post-war urban British kids.

According to the details published, the doc features exclusive contributions from Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Graham Coxon, Wilko Johnson, Gaz Combes, Mark King, Richard Barnes, Ricky Wilson, Johnny Marr and Sir Paul McCartney.

It also features ‘exclusive previously unreleased music’ from the band live in 1964. That last point is perhaps the biggest selling point.

The live airing is on Sunday 21st June 2015 at 1pm, with a second part airing on Sunday 28th June 2015, also at 1pm. No doubt it will be on iPlayer as soon as the first show has finished.
