It’s part of the Return of the Rudeboy exhibition, so perhaps you can take that in when you check out Duke Vin and the Birth Of Ska at Somerset House.

it isn’t a new film, think it might be around five years old. It isn’t the longest documentary you are like to see either at 50 minutes. But if the subject matter appeals and you are in the area, well worth checking out.

If you missed it a few years back, this is the story of Duke Vin and Count Suckle’s arrival in Britain in 1954, along with the music of the streets in Jamaica. Not long after, Vin set up the UK’s first sound system, introducing ska to the streets of London and indeed, the UK.

After the 50-minute documentary, there is a panel discussion with Return of the Rudeboy exhibition curators Dean Chalkley and Harris Elliot, along with Mykaell Riley, programme director of the Black Music Research Unit, University of Westminster. it takes place in Thursday, 21 August 2014, 18.30-20.30, with tickets £12 and available now at the Somerset House website http://www.somersethouse.org.uk/book-tickets/8683994b-32a9-4f82-97da-f2dbae4d425c.
