I know the channel has been making and researching the shows for a while, but the Fred Perry Presents Subculture series finally starts this week.

The first show is on Thursday 31st May at 12.30am on Channel 4, which looks at the birth of British youth subculture with the arrival of Teddy Boys and Rockers, and features interviews with Phill Jupitus and Robert Elms.

The second episode (7th June) is perhaps the most relevant here is called This Is The Modern World. And according to the write-up: ‘Explores the Mod subculture that exploded onto the London scene in the late 1950s and includes contributions from Jeff Dexter and Eddie Piller.’

The series has been overseen by Don Letts and will feature other youth cults as the weeks progress. Not sure what the end result will be like, I know Fred Perry has been running competitions and appeals to get footage from the era, but you suspect original ’60s footage will be thin on the ground, The content might be a little thin too, as the whole thing only lasts about 20 minutes.

Still, worth setting ‘record’ for – 20 minutes is better than nothing.
