Out next month is James Royal – Call My Name: Selected Recordings 1964 – 1970, via the RPM part of Cherry Red.

A retrospective has never been produced of Royal’s work until now. It seems a couple of years late really. Back in 2015, a one-off show was announced for the 100 Club, probably the perfect time to release a collection of work by the blue-eyed soul singer, adored both on the mod scene and the northern soul scene. it wasn’t to be.

This one does seem worth the wait though. Compiled and coordinated with the involvement of James himself and named after his most famous song, Call My Name starts with his debut in 1964, taking in his four collectable sides for Parlophone and pick of his output for the CBS label between 1967 and 1970.

All of the tracks have been mastered from the original tapes, with many never been reissued before on any format. In addition to the music, James has provided ‘a raft’ of period cuttings and previously unpublished photos for the booklet.

Basically, if you are a fan it’s pretty much essential. Out on 23rd June 2017 but available to pre-order now, the album sells for £12.99.

Cheers, Dave. Well, in fact there’s a compilation of his 60s 45s out there, issued by french label Magik.
