To some it’s a functional bit of army surplus that will forever be associated with the original mod scene. To one company in Japan, the fishtail parka is a template for a premium coat – the Nanamica Fishtail Coat.

Nanamica is known for reinventing classics, moving onto the fishtail parka, updating it with a modern-day fabric instead of the usual cotton twill. In this case, it uses a ‘nylon superfabric’ that’s lightweight, water-resistant and breathable.

On top of that, you get a drawstring peaked hood, zip fastening with press stud stormflap, two zip chest pockets, two lower press stud pockets, button adjustable cuff, internal drawstring waist and hem and press stud fold away fishtail hem.

Downside? I’m sure you can think of a few, but the obvious one is that the kind of people who like the parka probably want something original. Oh yes – and then there’s the price. This imported Japanese number will set you back £395.
