New band: The Impellers

Impellers

Listening to the Craig Charles Soul & Funk Show this week, I caught half a track that really grabbed my attention – a funky version of Jimi Hendrix's Fire. Seems it was the work of The Impellers.

Further research led me to find out that the band are a Brighton-based nine piece, formerly known as Ed Meme & The Forms and about to release their first album on Freestyle Records, Robot Legs. That's a follow-up to their debut single How Am I?, which is still available from Freestyle as a vinyl 45.

That Hendrix cover? Seems like it's on that long player, which, judging by the band's MySpace pages, will be a modern-take on a classic funky soul sound. That album is available for pre-order at Amazon with a release date of 27th July 2009.  If you want a taster, check out the band's MySpace page below.
