Note that I independently write and research everything in this article. But it may contain affiliate links.

I flagged this up when it first appeared on pre-sale, which was actually before it has even been written. Fast forward to now and Mods: A Way of Life by Patrick Potter is about to hit the shelves.

To be honest, I still don’t know much about it, but at least there are some pages and insights available about the finished product available to check out.

It doesn’t for a minute look like it will be in the same league as something like Mods: The New Religion or even Richard Weight’s Mods book. But I don’t think it’s even trying to compete with books of that substance.

This is part of ‘a series of photobooks’ focusing on youth cultures and only went into the writing stage in the second half of last year. It also features images you might well have seen before. The ones here do have a familiar look about them. I think that’s called getting the criticism out of the way.

But if you want an overview of mod without the depth of some of those previously mentioned books, not to mention some original 60s photography, then it might be worth a look. Or if you are a book completist for that matter. A comment by the author on an earlier version of this article (see below) probably gives some insight too.

As I said, I’ve not seen a finished copy and so I can’t really give a definitive opinion on it. I can only second guess based on the details sent over. If that’s good enough for you, then this 192-page hardback book is available to pre-order now ahead of the 23rd April 2018 publication date, selling for £13.51.

Hello. It’s kind of unnerving to see this book pop up here as I haven’t actually written it yet. I am, in fact, starting work on it today. The photography is already in place but the words are not. When I say ‘in their own words’ I mean I want at least fifty percent of the text to be interview based. I’m interested in interviewing anyone who is now or has been involved in the MOD subculture. I’m particularly interested in trying to figure out a MOD ethos / essence / philosophy / ideology / worldview and trying to trace it’s impact on the wider society over time. (So it’s not a book about fashion or music exactly) I’m not an insider so any tips are very welcome. THANKS.
