TERRY CAVENDISH ORCH. - LEAGUELINER Terry Cavendish Orch."Leagueliner" Licorice Soul (LSD 00) File under Singles and EP's For further details and full tracklisting click here Now this is cool! Here we have the first release from new Manchester-based reissue label Licorice Soul, and it's sure to grab the interest of fans of early-70's UK funky easy listening.
Despite The Terry Cavendish Orchestra name on the label, this is actually the handy work of Ray Davies (not *that* Ray Davies, the other one!), our old favourite Alan Hawkshaw and a whole host of classic session musicians, including Alan Parker on guitar and Herbie Flowers on bass. Both of the tracks that appear here were originally recorded for the Boosey & Hawkes library, and then found themselves on the a 1973 Pye Quadrophonic LP entitled 'All In An Afternoon's Work'. A-side 'Leagueliner' is a fantastic mish-mash of funky drums & percussion, wah-wah guitar and some damn cool brass. When I eventually get around to starring in my own contemporary re-make The Sweeney film (well, you might laugh, but if Stallone and Wahlberg can be Michael Caine, why can't I be John Thaw?), this will definitely be part of the soundtrack. Flip the record over, and you have Davies' own arrangement of 'Organ Grinder's Swing' - almost unrecognisable from the version made famous by jinking Jimmy Smith. That said, it's a great listen and Hawkshaw is all over it with his usual trademark, er, organ grinding! The 'lets bring the stripper on' outro is a total hoot, too. This is a limited number release of 700, so act fast and bag yourself a copy. Check out the Licorice Soul website for more information on new releases and on the label itself. My order for LSD 002 will be going in pretty soon... Reviewed by David Steel (review posted on 25th October 2003) More music reviews from Modculture |
