The Heavy Soul has kicked off a new series of lost or long-forgotten tracks with the release of  Who’s Laughing Now by The Shades of Blue.

The Essex-based band formed in early ’65, going into the studio to record four tracks, two of which are seeing an issue on vinyl 45 here after being forgotten about for the best part of 50 years. The other two should get a reissue further down the line.

Who’s Laughing Now head up the single, a good bit of 60s beat, with a driving beat complete with organ and fizzy guitar, not to mention a Marriott-esque vocal and some nice harmonies. It’s a tasty find, that’s for sure.

The b-side, following a similar formula, isn’t as strong to these ears. Not bad, just feels a little pedestrian compared to the flip, even if it quite a catchy little ditty.

But if you love your ’60s beat, it’s still well worth picking up. Already looking forward to the rest of the series (and the rest of the session by this band).

You can grab a copy via eBay now, with the single priced at £6.99. You can also hear both sides at that page too.
