After a brief appearance a few weeks back, it seems like the 1960s Adidas Originals Mexicana trainers might be getting a wider release.
I say ‘might’ because one retailer is now selling them in all sizes while others are holding ballots to get a pair. I sense that stock of these will not be around long. Although likely longer than they were on the official Adidas site, where popular sizes sold out in minutes.
If you missed out, the good news is that the retailer below has all sizes as I write and might even be doing free delivery too as a nice bonus. But before I get to that, let’s talk about the much-loved and rarely-seen Mexicana.
The clue is in the name here. This wonderful shoe was launched back in 1968, the year Mexico hosted the Olympic Games. They haven’t been seen much since.
But the style has resided in the archives at Adidas, and designs made in both Yugoslavia and West Germany have been carefully studied and subsequently reproduced for this 2022 edition.
So you get the rich golden yellow suede with contrasting leather overlays, the usual gold foil branding, and a rubber cup sole finished in white. That’s it, outside the sleek and slim profile that is typical of Adidas footwear of the era.
Yes, likely to be in demand and almost certain to sell out. But as I write, Hip has all the sizes in stock. They sell for £90.
