Update:

Note that the Lego Vespa set has just dropped into the sale, likely ahead of removal from the Lego range completely. You can now pick it up for around a third off (down from £90 to something like £66 or £67) from the likes of Smyths Toys, Argos, and Very.

Note also that someone is now selling a display case for the finished model as well as some working LED lights.

Original article:

There’s something about toys and the 1960s right now. You might recall the recently-released Playmobil 1960s Mini Cooper set for example, which proved really popular. I suspect this scooter kit will catch the eye even more.

This is a kit released as part of the Vespa 75th anniversary celebrations and to be honest, I would have expected a modern-era model to have been made available in kit form. But Lego has gone back to the golden era. offering up a 1960s model, described as a Vespa 125 in pastel blue complete with a 1960s Italian licence plate.

Of course, this isn’t aimed at kids. This is an adult build made up of 1,106 pieces and sure to keep you busy for quite a few nights before you get to show it off. If you love Lego (or did as a kid) that’s probably a good thing.

According to Lego, this is all about authentic details. So this Vespa features a front wheel mounted on one side, two seats, a removable engine cover (with a brick-built engine beneath), a functioning kickstand, plus working steering.

Finishing touches include the Vespa logo, that 1960s Italian licence plate, a spare wheel, a helmet, plus an accessories basket including a flower bouquet on the back.

The finished model is around 8.5 inches high, 13.5 inches long and 4.5 inches wide.

It all comes on an equally desirable box featuring the Vespa logo and the finished model, Yes, perfect when it comes to a gift for the vintage scooter lover in your life. But there is one word of caution and that’s the price.

Lego kits aren’t as cheap as they once were and especially when it comes to the bigger kits and limited editions. This one will almost certainly sell out in no time at all with so many collectors and scooter fanatics likely to be chasing it.

But you can buy it now if you have £89.99 to spare directly from Lego itself.
