This is well worth checking out. The new Boom! Italian Jazz Soundtracks (1959-1969) CD and LP.
I’m no jazz expert and I would never pretend to be. My knowledge of jazz is based on what I like, which tends to be jazz from this era and a little earlier. I have a few records in my collection, but others will have far more knowledge and expertise on the subject.
This album appeals – perhaps because it’s quite commercial. Film music has to be really to a point. Much like the Blow-Up soundtrack, this is jazz that’s catchy and in the main, pretty upbeat too. Background music to your very own hipster life. Yes, stick the headphones on and you too can pretend to be some kind of 1960s mover and shaker.
I know that because you can listen to it on Spotify right now ahead of purchasing, which is what I’ve been doing this week.
For a number of years, jazz was the music of choice when it came to Italian cinema and the pick of it is compiled here. 33 tracks that have been picked out of the CAM Sugar archive.
If you know your Italian cinema, all the better. But you don’t have to. You just need to be open to listening to a range of jazz sounds of the era, taking in everything from Californian be-bop, to ‘crime jazz’ or bossa nova. It’s also a rare look into the Italian jazz scene of that era too.
