Eddie Piller presents British Mod Sounds of the 1960s is a 100-track collection including rare and obscure material on both CD and vinyl.

That’s only half the story too, as there are different versions of this set. This might mean you thinking about buying more than one.

First off, there is a black vinyl six-LP set with a signed print and a clear vinyl set available exclusively through indie stores. But there’s also a four-CD set in an A5 media book a 34-track, 2-LP black/red and blue vinyl sets. Do you see what I mean about choice? I’ll round up the buying links for all at the end.

But first, let’s talk about the set itself, which is quite something. This is via Demon and in some ways, a companion piece to Eddie Piller presents The Mod Revival CD and vinyl set, which also had a follow-up vinyl set.

But it’s also very different. Not least in terms of the content within. Described as a set that captures ‘the essence of ‘60s Modernism’, this is a more in-depth look at the sound of the original scene in the UK.

According to Eddie, he chose the word ’Sounds’ carefully, reflecting the variety of talent contained here, from uncool session musicians without an ounce of style in them, acts who saw an opportunity to jump on the Mod bandwagon, and bands who whole-heartedly embraced the Mod way of life.

So the collection mixes the Mod mainstays (the Small Faces, The Who in embryonic form as The High Numbers, The Action, The Fleur De Lys etc), with a ‘generous selection’ of future superstars (David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Marc Bolan, Jeff Beck and Graham Gouldman of 10cc are all represented here) plus acts so obscure that they never got to release a record in the 1960s. They appear here courtesy of tapes discovered since.

You get all of that with the full vinyl and CD sets, but you can also pick up the smaller ‘curated’ 34-track highlights, which takes in the bigger names and operate as something of a sampler.

Great packaging of course and sleevenotes courtesy of Paul ‘Smiler’ Anderson.

How do you get them? Well, you can preorder all formats right now ahead of the release date of 4th February 2022. But they come from different sources. Here’s the lowdown.

  1. Pity not more previously unissued on this upcoming release. There is a lot around that could have been included.
