The first of a series, the Mojo Mod Icons Magazine: The Who edition is on the shelves now.
Who comes next? Well, that’s The Kinks (which you can pre-order) and beyond that, it sounds like no one at all This is described as a two-part series. So disappointment for anyone hoping for a Small Faces or The Action special. Shame, as those bands are far less represented and I’m sure there’s a market for it.
The reason for the two names chosen is obvious. They both became huge over subsequent years. Both had much in common, beginning life playing R&B in the dancehalls of London before picking up a large national and international fanbase.
Both groups also had songwriting genius to fall back on – Pete Townshend in The Who and Ray Davies in The Kinks, as well as other colourful characters playing key roles in the band, on-stage battles and some rock’n’roll excess.
The first edition is all about The Who, charting their ‘amazing journey’ from My Generation in 1965, right up to Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey’s current incarnation.
All the intervening years too. So the pop art phase, the mega-selling concept albums, profiles of the much-missed Keith Moon and John Entwistle and a look at the forgotten decades of the 1980s and 1990s.
All of that is over 132 pages, a mix of features and interviews from the Mojo archives plus dozens of rare and iconic photographs.
