The new clothing ranges are landing right now, including some new and eye-catching 1960s-style women’s knits at Fred Perry.
Fred Perry has probably pushed more towards a fashion market over the last few years. You only have to walk into one of its shops to see that. But it doesn’t neglect its classics, with a few designs either from its archive or inspired by its past still making the cut.
And that’s a good thing. There’s nothing wrong with looking forward, but ideally not at the expense of the past – and Fred Perry has a wonderful archive that always looks good, whatever the trends.
The new spring and summer knits have just landed, and there are a few interesting designs in that range. I’ve picked out a few that are likely to pique a Mod interest.
Fred Perry Mesh Knit T-Shirt
At the head of the page (and just love) is this gem that works a ‘less is more’ appeal.
Fred Perry describes this as a ‘contemporary take on the wild world of the ‘60s and ‘70s knitwear’, a light-wearing cotton and recycled nylon composition with a mock neck, cable knit detail and, of course, the Fred Perry logo. A classic look and just in, it sells for £110.
Fred Perry Knitted Polo Shirt
The knitted polo has been a Reissues classic for a few years in the men’s range. Now, there’s a version for women, too.
Tweaked a touch, this version has long sleeves rather than short, but maintains that knitted look. There’s also a contrast shiny viscose placket, single collar tipping, and the embroidered Laurel Wreath. £110 for this one too.
Fred Perry Pointelle Knitted T-Shirt
Another inspired by the archives – and in a burnt red straight out of the archives.
Again, keeping it simple makes this work. Using a combed cotton pointelle yarn, it has a deep neck trim in shiny viscose, a relaxed fit and yes, the logo on the chest. £90 for this one.
Fred Perry Textured Knitted Polo Shirt
Another was inspired by the archives, more specifically, from the 1960s and 1970s.
Inspired by past tennis wear, this is a light cotton and recycled nylon mix, with a two-button placket, ribbed trims, and the Laurel Wreath, all in a navy blue shade. £130 for this.
