That’s right, more Mod fiction. But I have a good feeling about the newly-released Out Of Time by Paul Davis.

I’ll be honest, this isn’t a book I have read as yet, so I can’t offer up a review of it. I’ll get round to picking up a copy eventually and will get onto it at some point.

But initial reviews seem promising and Paul is known from the Dublin Mod scene. So with that in mind, it sounds like it could be a winner.

As for the content of this 455-page book, here goes…

Jools and her friends are Mods, fanatical about sixties culture, fashion and music. All they want to do is look sharp, have a good time and dance all night.

A bizarre turn of events sets them on a course where they end up on the hit list of a notorious Dublin gangster, who’s determined to destroy them all.

The decisions she makes could put the ones she loves the most at risk and she may have to choose who lives. Could you? Drugs. Gangsters. Music. Murder. Mods. He’s out to kill. She’s out of time.

Does it sound like your kind of thing? If it does, you can order a copy now for £11.44 on paperback, with a Kindle version a little cheaper if you prefer to go paper-free.

  1. Thanks for the mention, I appreciate it. It’s been getting good reviews and has passed the 200 copies sold mark, but it’s still early days. Complete fiction, but the venues, clothes and music described in the book are all based on personal memories. Centred around Bubbles, a Mod club we went to in the 80s, one review described it as a love letter to Bubbles, which I suppose it is. That’s the club I first heard most of the records that I still listen to today and where I met most of the people who are still friends 35 years later. The club closed in 1987 and in 2010 I organised a reunion night. In 2020 we were set to have the 10th anniversary, but Covid put a stop to that. Since 2010, we’ve done nights April, October and December every year, plus band aftershow parties and Midsummer Modness trips to Waterford City, where there’s a big Mod, Soul and Ska scene.
Out Of Time is really my nod to a scene that I loved then and still do now and the people on it. Whether you were on the scene in the 80s in Dublin, Belfast, London or Manchester, we all danced to the same music and wore the same clothes. This book is an effort to capture that feeling of youthful exuberance and take the reader on a trip down memory Lane, but with the menace of a psychotic gangster thrown in to spice it up. All the characters are Mods and it’s set in the Mod world, but it’s a story about friendship and the lengths we’ll go to in order to protect the ones we love.
    Thanks
    Paul Davis
