It isn’t the cheapest thing on the shelves, but this Smith 1960s-style polo cardigan by Capirari is one of the more stylish options.
It isn’t cheap because this is a small run knit made by craftsmen in a high-end yarn. There are plenty of ‘Mod knits’ around that are made in bigger numbers and in a cheaper way – and there’s nothing wrong with any of them if that’s what you want. Everyone works to a budget. But if you have the money, this is a gem.
And like any quality knit, if you look after it, this will keep you warm for years to come. I’ve got knitwear going back several years – timeless designs that still look good after a number of washes. Buy well and buy once.
You probably know Capirari, which has featured in my Top 25 Mod labels for the 21st century round-up (which I do need to update). It’s run by Lorenzo out of Italy, who in turn uses ‘skilled artisans’ local to him to hand-produce these pieces in small runs.
This one is a 1960s gem. Crafted from premium (7 gauge) Tollegno extra fine merino wool, it has a design that contrasts a plain body with stripes and details it with covered buttons all the way up, ribbed trims, and a back collar mother of pearl button.
The fit is described as ‘classic’, and you get some spare covered buttons in case there’s an issue or accident because they’ll be hard to replace generally.
All the usual sizes are available, with two colour options and a price of €200.
