As a rule, bespoke is the ‘Mod’ way to go when picking up a suit – after all, you get to choose exactly what you want, the cloth you want it made from and the subtle detailing that will make you stand out from the crowd. Oh yes, the fit will be just right too.
However, we’re well aware that not everyone is comfortable with going to a tailor and if you live in some areas, the cost of going to a tailor is also restrictive. With that in mind, we did think about doing a top five ‘off the peg’ suit retailers, but in all honesty, we couldn’t find five that were worthy of highlighting, either because of price or quality. But we do have three retailers we feel are more than worth a look.
For a good quality, British-made suit with all the traditional Mod detailing, check out Adam of London. Adam has been in the fashion business for more years than he probably cares to remember (he even did the suits for Manchester United in a Cup Final in the 70s and has also produced clobber for George Best ‘back in the day). Check out the online store for a look at the suits, but to check out the fit, you probably need to get into the London store to try and get a bit of tweaking.
For a similarly classic style, you might also want to check out Brighton’s Jump The Gun. Again, a good range of suits, good quality and good cloths. If you’re in the Brighton area, drop in to check them out or see them online.
Finally, if you want something a little more distinctive and adventurous, check out the suits at DNA Groove. Italian made, but shipped worldwide, the DNA Groove suits benefit from owner Claudio’s wide knowledge of fashion both past and present, offering up some hip detailing you’ll not find anywhere else. As an example, check out the Barolo slim-fitting double breasted suit above, complete with ticket pocket, 7-inch side vents and working cuffs, with trousers packing all the classic Mod detailing. For this and many other styles, check out the DNA Groove website.
