A new, high quality photography book covering the Mod scene in Wales is heading your way if you back it. It goes by the name of Welsh Mod – Our Story.

Welsh Mod: Our Story is a Kickstarter project launching this week that hopes to culminate in that high-quality, hard-back photographic book of 150 pages plus, documenting the roots and revival of the Mod sub-culture in Wales from the 1960s through to the present day.

The book is being put together by Cardiff-based journalist and Mod enthusiast, Claire Mahoney.

‘I wanted to tell the Welsh side of the story. After all Mod mattered just as much to people in the so called ‘provinces’ as it did in the streets of Soho. It’s influence spread far and wide. Plus someone riding a Lambretta around Pontypridd in 1963 would have had to put up with a lot more ridicule than someone parked up in Frith Street in the same period.’

The book will be mainly photographic and Claire has been working with BAFTA-award winning Welsh photographer, Haydn Denman, who has already been photographing Mods across the generations up and down the country for the project.

The book will feature interviews with a number of well-known people connected to the Welsh Mod scene, including Welsh-born fashion designer and original Mod, Jeff Banks, Merthyr-born writer and film director, Jonathan Owen and Richard Parfitt of 60ft Dolls, as well a DJs, scooter enthusiasts and vintage retailers.

‘We will also explore why the uniquely Welsh landscape and the South Wales valleys in particular seemed to spawn a massive Mod revival in the late 70s and 80s,’ says Claire. ‘There has never been a book of this type that pays tribute to the Mod scene in Wales. This will be a first.’

If that floats your boat, you probably want to get a copy. That’s as easy as pledging for one.

The book costs £25 and is expected to be published in November 2018. You can pledge to support the Kickstarter by visiting the Kickstarter page. You can just pledge a small amount to support the project or you can pay for a book now to secure a copy and get your name in it.

Other rewards include a credit in the book and a postcard pack (as well as the book) or the book plus a limited edition A2 print. See the Kickstarter page for full details.

Like all these books, they will not become reality unless you do pledge, so please help if you can and if you like the idea of the book on your coffee table.
