I’ll be honest, I’ve never read it before, but the Mod cover feature in Vive Le Rock magazine might be worth a flick through.

Not that it’s an entirely Mod-related edition, but the cover and main feature cover Mod territory. Described as ‘Mod vs 2-Tone’, the main feature describes itself as ‘the battle for the nation’s youth and the dance floor’ focusing on The Selecter (featured on the cover) The Chords, Specials, Purple Hearts, Madness and Secret Affair.

It isn’t out yet, so I can’t tell you much about the end result, hence the point about flicking through it if you happen to see it on sale. The rest of the magazine seems to be a mix of alternative sound from days gone by, which may or may not be your thing. It’s certainly not completely Mod-focused. But it does generally cover the era of the Mod revival and beyond (if not the scene itself).

If you can’t find it, you can always order it online. If that’s your choice, you can grab a copy online at Rough Trade. It sells for £5.75.

  1. I’ve been reading VLR for a few years now, and i’m rarely disappointed by its content. Although not every genre or artist they cover is to my taste it’s pretty good for articles on punk, post-punk, reggae and so on. They have featured a fair bit of Mod-related stuff over the years too.
