We have flagged the book up before, but if you want to know more about Generation X by Charles Hamblett and Jane Deverson, check out The First Generation X on BBC Radio 4 on iPlayer while you still can.
If you haven’t encountered the book, it’s essentially a collection of interviews with teenagers from 1964, the voice of the original mod scene. It came about because Jane Deverson, a reporter for (of all things) Woman’s Own magazine, was asked to write a feature about the nation’s youth. The magazine turned down the material gathered, so she teamed up with journalist Charles Hamblett and the book was born.
There’s a rather nice catch-up piece with the author on the BBC site, with an hour-long documentary on the BBC site that looks at the book and catches up with some of the teenagers interviewed.
You can check out the radio documentary here – although it might disappear soon, as it was broadcast over a week ago. So don’t blame us if you miss it!
If you want a copy of the book, you can usually find one on eBay and Abebooks.
