If you are after a copy, Generation X by Charles Hamblett and Jane Deverson is now on eBay in paperback form.
It’s a book long out of print and an interesting one too if you want to know the mindset of young kids – and Mods – back in 1964. Yes, that’s the year this book was put together and published.
Not that it was ever meant as a book. This was intended as a feature in Woman’s Own magazine. But there was a problem with that. While Jane Deverson was commissioned to write the article, the magazine’s editor found the content too ‘racy’ for its readership. So she had the content, with nothing to do with it.
Enter Charles Hamblett, who helped put it together in book form, with the end result being the copy of Generation X you see here. There are other covers, but this is the classic one. In fact, such a classic that this Tandem book sleeve has even been made into a t-shirt by Gama Clothing.
It’s an interesting, albeit serious read and if you are one of those people who likes to dig deep into the subject matter, you’ll get a lot out of this one when it comes to the mindset of kids of that era and particularly, the Mod mindset of the day.
It doesn’t come up on eBay all that often and this copy is a first edition. As for condition, the seller points to the ‘usual sunning/browning to the pages’, some ‘creasing to the covers’ and ‘some biro marks to the front cover’. You can make your own mind up from the pictures.
Looks a good reader and at £9.99, decent value.

There’s also an American version on ebay with a group of rockers on the cover. I picked up the UK original about 30 years back, 10p, good condition too, result!
