Universal Works Polka Dot Red Scarf

by Modculture 21 February, 2011

Tootal still rules the roost whe it comes to 60s-style scarves, but it's far from the only maker. When I get time, I'll knock together an article of all the contenders. In the meantime, here's another we've just spotted – the Universal Works Polka Dot Red Summer Scarf.

It's a cotton scarf in a bold red with white spots, finished with fringe edging and Universal Works branding and sized around 110cm x 20.5cm.

£45 is the price online.

Colour Block Pocket Dress at Wallis

by Modculture 21 February, 2011

Thanks to Karen once more for spotting this mid-1960s-inspired number on the high street – the Colour Block Pocket Dress at Wallis.

Those colour blocks of course, for the decade, being black and white, with the (almost) knee-length dress featuring buttons on the straps, plus contrast pocket detailing, again with buttons finishing things off.

Made of a viscose and polyester mix (predominately the former), you can pick one up online for £55.

Jazzman launches Popcorn label

by Modculture 21 February, 2011

Yes, as the headline suggests, the Jazzman record label has launched an offshoot popcorn label – called Popcorn.

The first 45 of the 'love' or 'hate' vintage genre is a split single, Dolly Lyons' 'slinky mover' Palm Of Your Hand,  along with 'super-sleazy crime-jazz instrumental' Barricuda by the Page Boys, neither a million miles away from each other musically. £6 gets you one.

Also just landed is a new single on the Jukebox Jam label, along with a reissue 45 from Clarence Reid on the Soul7 label. All Available now on the site.

Fred Perry textured knit polo

by Modculture 18 February, 2011

Not seen this on the official site, but Oi Polloi does have this Fred Perry textured knit polo on its racks right now.

From the Laurel Wreath collection, this is a reissue of a 1960s vintage design, a design that's been on the racks for the last couple of years (presumably because the vintage ones used to shift for serious money).

Anyway, it's a textured knit polo in a bold red with twin-tipped collar and cuffs plus the Fred Perry Laurel wreath badge on the left chest. All of that for £89 instore and online.

£85 gets you one.

Fancy giving your scooter a holiday? You can at the Imperials Scooter Club Guernsey 2011 scooter rally.

It takes place over 28th – 30th May (bank holiday weekend), offering the beautiful scenery of Guernsey, hosting an event like this for the first time. It's described as 'scooter heaven' for riding.

Cost is £20, which gets you 15 per cent off the ferry cost, entry to three days of entertainment, some food and a rally patch. Spaces are apparently limited too, so if you want to know how to book, check out the event's Facebook page.

New Shindig! now available

by Modculture 18 February, 2011

Slight change of direction and feel for the new Shindig!, which is available from next week as Shindig! Quarterly.

Yes, the magazine is now quarterly, a little more chunky and now with a glassy cover. Seems some of the 'lifestyle' content has gone too, although that's more than compensated by a big increase in the music. Always a good thing.

Expect features on the Electric Prunes, Strawberry Studios, The Insomniac Cafe, Q65, The Majority, Thee Hypnotics, Clark Hutchinson and of course, plenty of other bits and pieces plus all the reviews. £7.49 for the expanded edition, officially on the shelves from next week or available to order online now.

Fania Records 2CD retrospective

by Modculture 15 February, 2011

Anyone fancying dipping their toes into vintage Latin might want to check out the new Fania Records 1964-1980: The Original Sound Of Latin New York 2CD set, which is incoming on the Strut label next month.

The period is important, taking in the emergence of boogaloo from the mid-60s, which eventually drifted into salsa (which is probably of less interest).

Still, it does offer decent value, with 29 tracks over the two discs, align with a 32-page booklet including a full Fania label history, memorabilia, album artwork and many previously unseen photos from the Fania archive. There's also a double vinyl release if you don't fancy the CD. March 29th is the release date, pre-order price is £11.99 for the CD, a hefty £22 for the vinyl. Tracklisting over the page.
